The Power of Giving Back: How Alumni Volunteers Keep Our Doors Open

Kevin D. lived at St. Stephen's House from 1991 to 1992. For 13 years, he had struggled to maintain continuous sobriety, despite being a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. After leaving St. Stephen's House, he stayed sober for four years — but something was still missing.

"What I realized was that I missed the third piece of the triangle of recovery: service," Kevin recalls. "I needed to give back."

Since August 30, 1995, Kevin has been giving back with extraordinary dedication. For over 19 years, he has been involved with St. Stephen's House, volunteering and fundraising. He sponsors within the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous and works the Twelve Steps in his daily life.

Kevin's story is far from unique. Many of our approximately 40 regular volunteers are alumni — graduates who returned to serve the community that helped save their lives. They cook meals, maintain the homes, mentor current residents, and organize fundraising events.

This cycle of giving back is what makes St. Stephen's House sustainable as a 100% community-funded organization. We receive no government funding. Every hour volunteered and every dollar donated goes directly to keeping our two homes operating for the men and women who need them most.

If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity, please contact Val Wootton at the women's house (519-858-5471) or Kevin Daly at the men's house (519-673-3692). Your time and talents are always greatly appreciated.
