Celebrating 40 Years of Recovery and Hope

In 2023, St. Stephen's House of London celebrated a remarkable milestone — 40 years of providing a safe, supportive home for men and women recovering from addiction. What began as the vision of Sister St. Patrick of the Sisters of St. Joseph has grown into two recovery residences serving the London, Ontario community.

Sister St. Patrick became acutely aware that chronic alcoholic men were not being adequately served within the hospital system and often fell between existing services. Her involvement with the Detoxification Centre on William Street, which opened on September 10, 1973, was the first step. The next was the opening of St. Stephen's House in 1983 on English Street in London.

Over four decades, hundreds of graduates have achieved success. Many alumni are among our 40 regular volunteers who are largely responsible for keeping the house running. Their dedication is a testament to the transformative power of long-term recovery support.

As we look to the future, our mission remains the same: everyone deserves a safe place to live. We continue to operate as a 100% community-funded organization, relying on the generosity of donors, volunteers, and community partners.

"For every $1 spent on recovery, the Government saves $7 in hospital, medical, and institutional care," reminds Kevin Daly, Men's House Manager. "Our work isn't just changing individual lives — it's strengthening our entire community."
